Bodyweight calf raise
Stand on a step, drop the heels, press up onto your toes. No weight, no machine, no gym. Your calves carry your whole bodyweight every time you walk, so the honest version of this needs the full range and a pause rather than a big number of fast reps.
Sink to a stretch, rise onto the toes.

How to do it
Find a step with something to hold
A stair with a bannister, a curb by a wall, a box near a rack. A light hand on something steady lets you concentrate on the calves rather than on balancing.
Balls of the feet on the edge
Front third of each foot on, heels hanging off the back, feet about hip width and pointing straight ahead. Legs straight.
Sink to a stretch, rise onto the toes
That is the cue on your wrist. Let the heels drop as far below the step as they will go, hold for a beat, then press up until you are fully on your toes.
Come down slowly
Take longer lowering than rising. With no weight to add, the tempo is one of the few dials you have.
What goes wrong
Doing them on flat ground
Standing on the floor, your heels cannot drop below your toes, so you only ever train the short half of the range. Find a step. It is the difference between the exercise working and not.
Bouncing out fast reps
Calf raises are the easiest movement in the library to bounce, and a bounced set is your Achilles springing you up rather than your calves lifting you. Pause at the bottom of every rep and the count will drop sharply, which is the point.
Adding reps instead of adding difficulty
When these get easy the instinct is to do more of them. The better answers are a slower descent, a longer pause, and then one leg at a time or a load. The library records a single-leg version and a dumbbell version as separate movements.
How Reckoner progresses this lift
Six weeks of this lift, run through the real engine. Nothing below was typed in: the prescription, the decision and the sentence beside it all come from the same code that writes your week.
| Week | Prescribed | What it did |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 x 10 | More reps 10 → 11 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 2 | 3 x 11 | More reps 11 → 12 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 3 | 3 x 12 | More reps 12 → 13 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 4 | 3 x 13 | More reps 13 → 14 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 5 | 3 x 14 | Deload 40% of sets offFive weeks of building, then one week lighter. About 40% of the sets come off. The load holds and your reps stay where you earned them, so you keep the strength and lose the fatigue. |
| 6 | 2 x 14 | More reps 14 → 15 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. The lighter week is over, so this is back to three sets. |
Real engine output, not an illustration. Every row was produced by running the engine itself when this page was generated.
The full rule, and why the reps move before the load does, is in how Reckoner decides to add weight.
Questions people ask
How do I make bodyweight calf raises harder?
Slow the lowering, pause at the bottom, and then move to one leg, which roughly doubles the load with no kit at all. After that you want weight, and the library carries a dumbbell version with its own record.
Is bodyweight enough for calves?
For a while. Your calves already move your bodyweight all day, so the stimulus from unloaded raises fades faster than it does for most muscles. The full range and a real pause is what keeps them useful for as long as they are.
Will Reckoner take this out of my plan for an injury?
No. The library records no restrictions against any of the six calf movements.

There is no load to ease on this lift, so Reckoner offers one of these the first time it stalls. Each of them has a page.
