Dumbbell calf raise
Stand on a step with a dumbbell in each hand and press up onto your toes. It is the standing calf raise for a gym with no calf machine, and the only real limitation is that your hands give out a long time before your calves do.
Sink to a stretch, rise onto the toes.

How to do it
Find a step and take the dumbbells
A stair, a low box, a weight plate, anything solid that lets your heels hang off the back. Take a dumbbell in each hand, arms hanging straight down.
Balls of the feet on the edge
Front third of each foot on the step, heels free, feet about hip width and pointing straight ahead. Stand tall with the legs straight.
Sink to a stretch, rise onto the toes
That is the cue on your wrist. Let the heels drop below the step until the calves lengthen, pause, then press up as high as you can go.
Steady yourself if you need to
One hand on a wall or a rack with one dumbbell in the other is a legitimate way to do this, and it is better than wobbling through a set. Just log which way you did it and stay with it.
What goes wrong
Letting the grip decide the set
Calves are strong and hands are not, so this movement usually ends because you could not hold on. That is a limit of the setup rather than a training result. Straps are a reasonable answer, and so is moving to a machine when one is free.
Bending the knees to get the weight up
A small dip and drive makes a heavy set possible and takes the calves out of it. The knees stay straight and the only joint moving is the ankle. If you need to bend to finish a rep, the set is finished.
Losing the bottom of the range
Under load the heels tend not to travel as far down, and that is the half of the range that matters most: training the calf at length grew it 5.6 per cent against 2.1 for the shortened position over twelve weeks1. Go lighter and drop further.

Questions people ask
Do I need a step?
You need the heels to be able to drop below the toes, so yes, something. On flat ground the movement starts at the top of the range and you lose the stretched half of it, which is the half worth having.
One dumbbell or two?
Two if your balance allows it, one with the other hand steadying you if it does not. Reckoner records this on the dumbbell ladder, so log the total load you actually held and keep the method consistent so the numbers compare.
Will Reckoner take this out of my plan for an injury?
No. The library records no restrictions against it. It is the only calf movement that records the forearms as a secondary muscle, which is the grip problem showing up in the data.
