Dumbbell step-up

Put one foot on a box and stand up on it. Simple to describe and easy to cheat, because the leg still on the floor can do most of the work without you noticing. Done honestly it is one of the most demanding things in the library for the glutes.

How to do it

  1. Pick a box you can reach without lurching

    Knee height is a good default. High enough to be work, low enough that you are not throwing yourself at it. Make sure it will hold your weight and the dumbbells, and that it will not slide.

  2. Take a dumbbell in each hand and set one foot on the box

    Whole foot on, not just the toes. Stand close enough that your shin is roughly vertical when the foot is up there.

  3. Push through the top foot to stand

    That is the cue on your wrist, and it is the entire exercise. Drive down through the foot on the box until that leg is straight and you are standing on it. The bottom leg does not push.

  4. Lower under control, same leg

    Step back down slowly and touch the floor with the bottom foot without putting weight on it. Finish the reps on that side before you swap.

Questions people ask

How high should the box be?

About knee height. That is high enough to demand real work from the top leg and low enough that you can get up there by pushing rather than by lunging at it.

Do I have to step back down slowly?

It is worth it. The lowering is free training you have already paid for by getting up there, and dropping off the box gives it away. It also stops the descent being a small impact on a straight leg every rep.

Will Reckoner give me this with a knee restriction?

No. Knee is the one restriction recorded against it, and unlike most of the leg movements it records no hip restriction.
