Shin-height step-up

A step-up onto something low. The height is the whole specification: no higher than mid shin, which keeps the rep inside a range almost anybody can control and stops it turning into a lunge at a step. It is where a step-up starts, not a lesser version of one.

How to do it

  1. Find something solid at mid shin or below

    A low box, a bottom stair, a sturdy step. It has to hold your weight without sliding or tipping. Step onto something no higher than mid shin, which is the cue on your wrist and is a limit rather than a suggestion.

  2. Place one whole foot on it

    The whole foot, close enough that your shin comes up near vertical. Hands free at your sides or lightly on a wall if you need the reassurance early on.

  3. Push through the top foot to stand

    Drive down through the raised foot until that leg is straight. The foot on the floor does not push. That is the difference between training the top leg and stepping up a stair.

  4. Lower under control on the same leg

    Come back down slowly and touch the floor lightly. Finish the reps on that side before you swap. If you are dropping off it, the height or the rep count is ahead of you.

Questions people ask

Why is the height capped at mid shin?

Because above that most people stop pushing with the top leg and start hauling themselves up with the torso, and the exercise quietly becomes something else. Keeping it low keeps the work where it is meant to be.

How do I progress this?

Slower lowering and a pause at the top first. Then load: the library carries a vest step-up and a dumbbell step-up, both onto a box, and both are separate movements with separate records.

Will Reckoner take this out of my plan for an injury?

No. This is one of the few movements in the library with no restrictions recorded against it at all. That is a fact about the record rather than a clearance, and a specific injury is still a conversation for whoever is treating it.
