Vest step-up
A step-up in a weighted vest. Nothing in your hands, which means no dumbbells to swing and nothing to grip, so the only thing that fails is the leg on the box. That is the point of loading a step-up this way.
Push through the top foot to stand.

How to do it
Fit the vest tight and set the box
Vest against the ribs with no play in it. A box at about knee height that will hold you and the vest without sliding.
Put one whole foot on the box
Whole foot, standing close enough that the shin is roughly vertical. Arms free at your sides.
Push through the top foot to stand
That is the cue on your wrist. Drive down through the raised foot until that leg is straight and you are standing on the box. The bottom foot does not push.
Lower under control on the same leg
Step back down slowly, touch the floor lightly, and go again. Finish the side before you swap.
What goes wrong
Pushing off the bottom foot
The vest makes each rep heavier and makes the temptation to push bigger. A small press from the floor is nearly invisible and it takes most of the difficulty out. Start each rep with the bottom toe light and see whether the rep still happens.
Raising the box because the vest feels light
Knee height is the height that keeps you pushing with the top leg rather than hauling with the torso. When the vest is not enough, the honest options are the dumbbell step-up or a heavier vest, not a higher box.
Skipping the lowering
Stepping down and dropping down are different exercises and only one of them trains anything. The descent is half the rep and you have already paid for it by getting up there.
Treating it as an accessory because there are no dumbbells
A loaded step-up is one of the most demanding hip exercises there is. In a systematic review across sixteen studies, step-up variations produced the highest gluteus maximus activation of any exercise reviewed, above the hip thrust and the conventional deadlift1. Program it early in the session.
How Reckoner progresses this lift
Six weeks of this lift, from 8 kg, run through the real engine. Nothing below was typed in: the prescription, the decision and the sentence beside it all come from the same code that writes your week.
| Week | Prescribed | What it did |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 x 6 at 8 kg | More reps 6 → 7 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 2 | 4 x 7 at 8 kg | More reps 7 → 8 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 3 | 4 x 8 at 8 kg | More reps 8 → 9 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 4 | 4 x 9 at 8 kg | More reps 9 → 10 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 5 | 4 x 10 at 8 kg | Deload 40% of sets offFive weeks of building, then one week lighter. About 40% of the sets come off. The load holds and your reps stay where you earned them, so you keep the strength and lose the fatigue. |
| 6 | 2 x 10 at 8 kg | Load up 8 kg → 9 kgYou hit the top of the range at RPE 7, so the bar goes up 1 kg to 9 kg and reps reset to six. The lighter week is over, so this is back to four sets. |
Real engine output, not an illustration. Every row was produced by running the engine itself when this page was generated.
The full rule, and why the reps move before the load does, is in how Reckoner decides to add weight.
Questions people ask
Vest step-up or dumbbell step-up?
The vest if you want your hands free and your grip out of it, which on a step-up is often what runs out first. Dumbbells if you want to go heavier than the vest holds. Both are in the library with their own records.
Does the vest change the box height?
No. Knee height is still the target, because the reason for it is where the work goes rather than how heavy you are. If the vest makes knee height too hard, take weight out rather than lowering the box, or use the shin-height step-up, which is a separate movement here.
Will Reckoner give me this with a knee restriction?
No. Knee is the one restriction recorded against it, the same as the dumbbell step-up, and neither records a hip restriction.
Similar movements
Reckoner eases the load first when this lift stalls, and offers one of these only if it stalls again after that. A lift already as light as your kit goes has no load left to ease, so the offer comes straight away. Each of them has a page.
