Cable woodchop

A cable set high, a handle in both hands, and a turn that takes it diagonally across your body to the opposite hip. The turn is supposed to come from your torso rotating over your hips. In most gyms it comes from the arms, and the difference decides whether the exercise is worth doing.

How to do it

  1. Set the pulley high and stand side on

    Feet a bit wider than the shoulders, side to the stack, far enough away that the cable is under tension in the start position. Both hands on the handle, arms nearly straight.

  2. Turn through the trunk

    Rotate your ribcage away from the stack and let the back foot pivot with it. The handle travels because your torso turned, not because your elbows bent.

  3. Finish at the opposite hip

    The chop ends when the rotation runs out, roughly with the handle outside the far hip. Keep the arms long and the hips over the feet rather than collapsing sideways.

  4. Return under control

    Let the cable turn you back slowly to the start, resisting the whole way. That resisted return is at least as much of the exercise as the chop is.

Questions people ask

Does the woodchop build rotational power for sport?

Nobody has tested this exercise for that, so this page does not claim it. What has been tested is trunk training as a category: across thirty-one controlled trials in athletes it produced small to moderate improvements in strength, sprint speed, change of direction and sport-specific performance1. That supports training the trunk. It says nothing about the woodchop in particular.

High to low or low to high?

Both are the same idea with the angle reversed and the library carries the high to low version. If your gym only has a low pulley free, running it the other way trains the same rotation.

How does Reckoner handle a one-sided movement?

It prescribes it per side and expects both, so the sets you log cover the whole movement rather than half of it.
