Dumbbell lateral raise
Two light dumbbells, arms out to the side, stop at shoulder height. It is the most direct way to train the side of the shoulder and the exercise most reliably ruined by using too much weight, because there is no way to cheat it that does not stop it working.
Lead with the elbows, no swinging.

How to do it
Stand tall with the weights at your sides
Feet about hip width, knees soft, ribs down, dumbbells hanging beside your thighs with the palms facing in. Let the shoulders settle rather than shrugging them first.
Raise out with the arms long
Lead with the elbows, arms almost straight with only a slight bend. When it was measured, bending the elbow clearly reduced side deltoid activity compared with keeping the arm long1.
Stop at shoulder height
The hands finish roughly level with the shoulders and no higher. Past that the trapezius takes the movement over and the side of the shoulder has already done its part.
Lower slowly and start the next rep from still
Take three or four times as long coming down as going up. A dumbbell weighs almost nothing to your shoulder at the bottom, so a bouncing rep starts from a position where the muscle is not loaded at all.
What goes wrong
Swinging the weights up
A small dip and a heave gets a much bigger dumbbell moving. The shoulder then works for the last part of the rep only, and the number on the dumbbell tells you nothing about what it did.
Shrugging at the top
The shoulders climb toward the ears to finish the rep. That is the trapezius bailing you out, and it is the sign the weight is too heavy.
Choosing a weight you can only manage bent
Folding the elbow shortens the lever and lets you lift more, which feels like progress. It also measurably reduces what the side deltoid is doing1.
How Reckoner progresses this lift
Six weeks of this lift, from 8 kg, run through the real engine. Nothing below was typed in: the prescription, the decision and the sentence beside it all come from the same code that writes your week.
| Week | Prescribed | What it did |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 x 12 at 8 kg | More reps 12 → 13 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 2 | 3 x 13 at 8 kg | More reps 13 → 14 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 3 | 3 x 14 at 8 kg | More reps 14 → 15 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. |
| 4 | 3 x 15 at 8 kg | Load up 8 kg → 9 kgYou hit the top of the range at RPE 7, so the bar goes up 1 kg to 9 kg and reps reset to twelve. |
| 5 | 3 x 12 at 9 kg | Deload 40% of sets offFive weeks of building, then one week lighter. About 40% of the sets come off. The load holds and your reps stay where you earned them, so you keep the strength and lose the fatigue. |
| 6 | 2 x 12 at 9 kg | More reps 12 → 13 repsYou finished every set at RPE 7, with room left in the range, so the reps climb before the load does. The lighter week is over, so this is back to three sets. |
Real engine output, not an illustration. Every row was produced by running the engine itself when this page was generated.
The full rule, and why the reps move before the load does, is in how Reckoner decides to add weight.
Questions people ask
Should I turn the thumbs down at the top?
The popular cue is that pouring out a jug hits the side deltoid harder. When they measured it, the internally rotated version produced the greatest upper trapezius, rear deltoid and triceps activity of any variation, and it was not shown to beat a neutral arm at the side deltoid on the way up1. Keep the arm neutral.
How much weight should I be using?
Almost certainly less than you are. This is a small muscle working through a long lever, and the honest load looks embarrassing next to the rest of your session. If you cannot stop at shoulder height with the arm long, it is too heavy.
How many sets a week?
More weekly sets keep buying more size and more strength, with the returns shrinking as the count climbs, and spreading them over more days matters far less for size than the total does2. Reckoner works your number out from your plan and what you logged.
Similar movements
Reckoner eases the load first when this lift stalls, and offers one of these only if it stalls again after that. A lift already as light as your kit goes has no load left to ease, so the offer comes straight away. Each of them has a page.
